In the home studio, USB cables play multiple roles:

  1. They provide power to your outboard gear (audio interfaces, keyboards, controllers, mics…)
  2. They can carry audio signal, but only in digital format (typically between your audio interface and computer)
  3. They can also carry MIDI information.

And these functions run simultaneously.
So, if you have purchased an entry-level audio interface or any type of recent keyboard, you will be using USB.
