In the home studio, USB cables play multiple roles:
- They provide power to your outboard gear (audio interfaces, keyboards, controllers, mics…)
- They can carry audio signal, but only in digital format (typically between your audio interface and computer)
- They can also carry MIDI information.
And these functions run simultaneously.
So, if you have purchased an entry-level audio interface or any type of recent keyboard, you will be using USB.
